Hello and Happy New Year!

I am hard at work in the studio getting ready for this year’s
shows I can’t believe that BeadFest Spring is just 3 months away. I can tell I’m starting to sweat the deadline
when I noticed that it’s a leap year so I get an extra day.

Some of you have contacted me about my Etsy store being
closed and I wanted to take a minute to explain that decision. I have been on Etsy for nearly 10 years now
(including my first shop, Jewelry by Jules) so it wasn’t an easy decision. Between the upkeep and profitability
(specifically, the lack of profitability in the past few years), I decided to
expend my energies elsewhere for now.

Specifically, I am selling on Facebook in two lampwork
groups; Lampwork Bead Market and Handmade Lampwork Beads for Sale.
I usually list on Wednesday or Thursday at about 8 pm EDT.

I will still be attending BeadFest Spring, Bead &
Button, and BeadFest Fall. Please check
back for updates and discount coupons. I
also welcome custom orders, just let me know what you need.

Finally, given the response, I will work on posting items
for sale here as well. It won’t be on
the scale of my Etsy store but perhaps a page for beads and one for finished
jewelry. Please let me know what you
would like to see here.

Thank you!

Now, I'm going to take a little vacation to one of my favorite places, Seattle! I will be returning about mid-September so my Etsy store will re-open then. I will be restocking my store and torching up projects for next season (Bead Fest April will sneak up fast). If you saw something at the show but can't find it in my store, just let me know, and I will move it to the front of the line.

Here are some pictures from my last trip a couple of years ago...
Bead Fest Philadelphia will be my last stop for 2014 and it's gone by quickly. I am cleaning and arranging inventory to get ready for the August 22nd-24th show. I will be in booth 557 this year. That's in the right side, artist side of the hall. I was not able to secure a 2 table booth at this show so my booth will be crammed with goodies!

Here is your $5 admission pass. This gets you in the door for just $5 instead of the regular $15.
I had been hoping to add another big bead show to my schedule and suddenly, I did! I will be vending at Bead Fest this Spring, which is, oh by the way, just 2 weeks away. I am making goodies like crazy. I don't have my booth number yet so stay tuned.

Also, if you are attending Bead & Button and would like free admission to the bead marketplace from Friday through Sunday of the show, here you are:

The instructor, Kelly Jenkins, has been doing pot melt glass for about 13 years and really knew the ins and outs of the process. Basically, it involves putting scraps of fuse glass (90 COE) in a ceramic pot, ramping up the kiln and allowing the glass to flow out the bottom of the pot into a puddle. There are a variety of hole-configurations in the bottom of the pots which can affect the outcome and choosing the right combination of glass is an art form onto itself. Once the puddle is cool, it can be cut with a saw or broken with a hammer. The edges of the pieces then get ground smooth and the piece gets re-fired in the kiln to soften the edges.

We spent the first day filling our melt pots with glass and then and shaping pieces of melts that the instructor had ready made. Kelly fired our finished pieces and the pot melts at her studio because the Art Center kilns weren't large enough to hold all of them. The next day, we had the raw result of our pot melts and the finished pieces.

Here are my results:

Here are pendants I made with a pot melt the instructor had. I love how these look like agate!

I almost passed on these until I saw how the bubbles made them look alien!

The class was fun and I'm glad I was able to try this technique. I might try adjusting the firing schedule to use lampwork scraps and shorts.

If you are interested in more information, go to delphiglass.com and enter "pot melt" in the search. They have a variety of tools and YouTube videos on the subject.

If you are local, keep an eye out for another class at the Art Center (it's listed under jewelry, not glass).

I think my body is already on daylight savings time trying to get that extra hour.

Things have settled down enough that I can play hookey on Fridays and while the weather lasts, I'm going to be outside. Here are a few from today's adventure. I'm still getting the hang of my camera but I think I have mastered the "auto" setting; only a bazillion settings left to go! I'm taking a photography class at the (Indianapolis) Arts Center next month so hopefully quality will improve.

I'm going to list some larger vessels, discontinued colors, and past series here and see how it goes and if it goes well, increase and expand my offerings. Etsy just hasn't been the fountain of sales it once was so I'm moving around a little.

Listings will be once a week at first and I think I will stick with Sunday afternoons. Since I'm doing 7 day auctions, ending on a weekend might be more convenient.

With the "big" shows out of the way, this is the time of year when I change focus. I do a few local art shows but otherwise, it's time to reflect, redirect and recharge.

I'm taking an art marketing class at the Indianapolis Art Center right now hoping to learn some new and better ways of presenting my work and communicating with those interested in it.

They also have a couple of photography classes that I want to take. I ended up getting a different camera, a Nikon D3200 right before Bead Fest and I haven't learned half the buttons yet so that will be a big focus this fall.

My next event will be the 2nd Annual ISLAGA Bead Show on Sunday, September 30th. The super nice folks at Rings and Things let us hold our show in conjunction with theirs for the ultimate in local bead shopping nirvana. Details are on my EVENTS page, come visit us!

Of course I will be getting back to the torch soon and working on some new design ideas but my immediate focus will be to get more wee vessels and focals in the Etsy shop. If you need something you don't see listed, just let me know and I will move it to the front of the line.

Cheers!
Julie

"Red" and I took several pictures while getting to know one another and I learned a few things about nature photography; birds are really fast, flowers aren't and all deer seem to know about what I accidentally did to their kind on the way to Milwaukee a few weeks ago.
hobby. Glass is what I do for a living and jewelry making is kind of a part of that but I needed to do something different.

I had tried crochet when I was young and my grandmother tried to teach me. I remember going home with a big skein of peach colored yarn and crocheting until I thought my fingers would fall off just so my grandmother would be impressed with how much I had done. Unimpressed, she immediately noticed a mistake I made, way at the bottom, like in the third row. She then helped me by ripping out all of my work back to the place where I had made my mistake and handed it back to me. I handed it back to her and told her I didn't think I wanted to crochet anymore. I also told her that I didn't want to go to church anymore either. I thought it was as good a time as any to mention the church thing since I was talking about things I didn't want to do anymore but I must have seemed like a strange kid to her.

Anyway, I took up knitting last year and set a goal
to make scarves for everyone in the family.
You wouldn't believe the knitting resources available online. If you are interested in learning, I recommend Ravelry (www.ravelry.com) for projects and patterns. The website lets you filter through several criteria to choose the best project. Also, Very Pink (www.verypink.com). When you look at knitting patterns and come to an abbreviation that you just can't picture, go to Very Pink, type it in the search box and you will probably find a nifty video of Staci demonstrating and explaining the stitch a couple of times until you get it. She also has some great project ideas.

The goal for this Christmas was hats. It was a
good challenge; circular knitting, increases, decreases, not twisting at the
join. Plenty of new skills to master.

I posted on Facebook about these but couldn’t include
pictures since they are gifts but here they are now as well as a few jewelry
items to help keep the handmade emphasis.

I’ve worked with shards before and I’ve even made my own but I never really saw the appeal of them. The technique is just to wind glass off the end of a hollow mandrel and then blow the glass “balloon” steadily until a thin-but-not-too-thin sphere emerges. Kind of like a light bulb body. Applying them takes a little effort and technique but…still, no big deal to me.

I finally played with them a couple of weeks ago and after I saw what came out of the kiln, I ordered two more colors.

Take a look!
The most common question I am asked about my work is "how fragile is it?" It's a valid question for a person thinking about designing or wearing a piece of jewelry with lampwork beads. Even more so since I work with hollows and vessels.

My simple answer is that it is as strong as glass can be made to be through annealing and annealing is the process of heating the glass, in a kiln, to the highest temperature without causing the item to melt or deform and then slowly cooling it down to room temperature. In the process, any stress in the glass from the lampworking process, is removed and the glass molecules settle into their strongest configuration. Glass that is not annealed can crack or shatter at any time and with the slightest pressure or temperature fluctuations.

Annealing is also the difference between artisan lampwork and imported lampwork. "Lampworked" beads sold by jewelry supply catalogs and "trading" companies as well as online resellers are rarely annealed and that is one of the biggest factors that allows them to sell their beads at such a cheap rate. I could talk about the cost savings they enjoy by not bothering with ventilation, safety, fair wages, etc. but...

So when I'm asked "how fragile is it," yes I rattle off the simplest explanation I have about annealing but sometimes the visual works best. Not every piece I make is a winner that I'm proud to sell and it's these homely pieces that I end up using for myself. One of which was a cute weessel made from a metallic glass that had one handle just a little too skinny. I decided to attach it to my cell phone just to see how long it would last given how rough I am with my phone. Three years later and the cell phone lanyard has broken before the vessel. Some of the metallic sheen has worn away and, well, it wasn't that pretty to begin with so I am retiring it and starting a new experiment with one of my hollow beads.

Hello and Welcome! On your journey around the world you have now landed in Indiana in the Midwest of the United States. I am your hostess, Julie Miller. I’ve been lampworking, that is making glass beads and beadie type things, for about 6 years now. I used to have a day job. I used to serve 9 to 5 in a cubicle but an early recession liberated me from that and when the next job was just not to be found, I took it as a sign that maybe it was time to take a leap of faith and do something else. I have been working full time in glass every since!

I make glass vessels, wee vessels I call weessels and I make glass globe pendants. I also make hollow beads and other lampwork beads as the whim and muse nudge me. I mostly enjoy working from my studio in my home. I’m a home body and I like to be able to torch when an idea hits me or go visit with friend on the computer. Sometimes, it’s good to just take a nap with cats and go back to “work” later. For the business end of things, I mostly sell online but I also participate in some local and national shows.

In my spare time, I am a rabid movie fan particularly sci-fi. I also enjoy dabbling with jewelry making. I mostly stick with glass and my glassy friends at ISLAGA our local lampwork club and chapter of ISGB.

Thank you for taking time out of your tour to visit with me! If you would like, please leave a comment below. I will add your name to the drawing for this lovely sea shell globe necklace. I know it’s an odd keepsake from the Midwest but would you really want a globe full of corn or soy beans? The globe was blown at my torch, filled with sea shells from Florida, and sealed with a handmade sterling silver cap and wire bail. It’s strung on brown greek leather cord with a sterling silver C clasp.
To win, you will need to leave your name and email address or a way to contact you if you win! I will choose the winner and contact them on February 17. (If you do not respond with a mailing address within 5 business days, I will choose another winner) This opportunity is open to everyone around the world. If you win, you win, no strings attached and no shipping charges apply.
Good luck and happy journey!Julie Miller Glasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06721452955593807282noreply@blogger.com161tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1937763374907697504.post-604832570058872962011-01-14T10:06:00.000-08:002011-01-14T10:06:42.494-08:00My Favorite Glass: DevardiI love getting my hands on new glass and playing but I think I could benefit from being a little more constructive and methodical in my testing and experimentation. So, to put me on that path, I am going to post, a couple times a month, about different types of glass and my results; a virtual journal that I can share (and not misplace).

I stumbled across Devardi glass while browsing on the ABR Imagery website. Some of the colors looked intriguing and others looked like the standard effetre colors.

To begin, Devardi glass is from India and, per the website http://www.devardiglass.com/) it is hand pulled and lead free. Their goal is to provide a more economical glass option for lampworkers and given that most of the glass is $6.00USD or less per pound, they seem to have achieved that goal. I bought a couple of rods of colors that I thought looked interesting and here’s what I found.

Overall, the rods are hand pulled and not very consistent in diameter. This doesn’t pose much of a problem to me and I can work with it. I do recommend inspecting each rod before use for inclusions. I’m not sure what these are, some look like kiln brick, but these are foreign objects, not glass, that will cause the rod to explode when heated. These tend to appear at one end and can be nipped out or carefully heated and tweezed out.

Examples of the hand pulled nature of the rods

Examples of inclusions

The transparents are stiffer which makes them ideal for hollow beads but a little tricky in blowing out for vessels.

Then, there are the bubbles. Some rods seem to bubble up like seeded glass and others less so but I think if you are using this glass, you should count on some bubbles and just work around it. I love bubbles so I’m a happy camper!

In summary, I bought a good stock of some of the interesting colors and look forward to adding them to my permanent palette but the colors that are similar to effetre, well, I’ll stick with the devil I already know.

Now, the fun stuff, the colors:

Dark Rose and Rose (I didn’t try pale rose). Can you see the difference, not much of one is there.

My fur kids have their Christmas present already. Actually, they've had it since I bought it on Black Friday. I'm not a big shopper and certainly not a Black Friday shopper but this year, for them, I was. I had had my eye on this colossal kitty tree for awhile. The one they had (on the left) was woefully inadequate since the second, lower bunk isn't even at window-gazing height. This left poor Buster to sit with his front paws folded on the window sill like Oliver Twist begging for seconds.

Gracie "Hurry, take the picture, I can't keep my gut sucked in much longer!"

There was a little problem though. No, getting it in the car and in the house was a struggle but I managed. The problem was the top bunk was a little too high. Gracie is, well, a tubby tabby, a portly puddy tat. She manages the lower bunk of the new tree but that is probably the extent of her abilities. So it was up to Buster to claim the top bunk but he just hadn't been up to it, yet. A couple of nights ago, he finally, and with less grace than normal, clawed his way to the top. He's been insufferably smug every since. He now sits proud and high, flinging stuffed mice and toys off to their plummeting doom and gloats over Gracie and me equally.

Buster "That meecie wasn't pushed, he jumped"

I like it too. Positioned in the front window, in clear view of the street and all who pass by, it clearly states that the neighborhood crazy cat lady lives here.
